Get ready for a long, sustained climb to reach the highest point of the Cantalien volcano at 1855m, and the highest basalt peak in France!

Starting point: the hamlet of Les Gardes.
The route starts near the old village oven. The path climbs steadily along the "Pierre du Loup" wood*, between mountain pastures and undergrowth, to reach the buron des Gardes and the artificial lake used to power the snow cannons. From the edge of the lake, you'll catch a glimpse of mountain burons and the rocky spur of l'Arpon du diable, whose gashes in the rock have inspired legends. And don't forget to take a break to enjoy a lovely view of Puy Griou.
From the lake, the ascent becomes steeper and more difficult (winding ascent on grassy then stony paths) to arrive near the cable car building. The climb to the summit of Plomb du Cantal is an easy one, with wooden steps,

*For the record, the last wolf in the Monts du Cantal was killed near Les Gardes in 1927.)
