Situated on a wide plateau between the Cère and Goul valleys, this hike, which is a long distance but not very steep, is a veritable belvedere over the Monts du Cantal, offering 360° views at all times.
The village of Badailhac lies on a broad basalt flow at an average altitude of 1000m, stretching between the Col de Curebourse/Rocher des pendus to the north, and the Rocher de Carlat to the south.
Its church, St Jean-Baptiste, was founded at the end of the 16th century as a modest chapel served by the Raulhac clergy. It disappeared during the Wars of Religion, but was rebuilt under the reign of Henri IV and completed in 1625. Having become a parish church in very poor condition, it was rebuilt a second time in 1886, thanks to the generosity of Monseigneur Géraud Soubrier, Bishop of Oran. In 2007, major interior work was carried out thanks to a donation from a local family (rose window around the chandelier, frieze highlighting the stained glass windows and a beautiful fresco at the back of the church).
An inscription on one of the buildings, "Ici, on loge à pied et à cheval" ("Here, we lodge on foot and on horseback"), formerly the "Auberge des Voyageurs", used to serve as a bistro, tobacco store and grocery store.
Depart from the parking lot near the church or the town hall.
The trail starts alongside the town hall and continues for a good distance between meadows until it reaches a small road; cross it and take the path directly opposite. This joins the D57, which you should follow as far as the relais des huttes, after passing "Les Huttes". At the relay station, take the wide track on the right that runs alongside the forest and into the mountains. This track continues for some time and joins a gravel track which you follow to the right. You'll come to a hamlet called "Vernet". Follow the small road back to the D57. A little further on, turn left onto the farm track, which climbs slightly and then descends to rejoin the road. Turn right onto the road for a few metres and take the track on the left which joins a farm. This wide track continues and reaches an intersection. At this junction, take the track on the right which leads back to Badailhac.Marking : Marked-out walking circuit - Green markingEquipments : Car park, Admission fee : Free access.Opening : All year round daily.
